Symposium Structure: When the Virtual Meets Virtue

Virtual: concrete ICT-based platforms and pedagogical methodologies
Virtue: humanistic educational values that should serve as the basis for the virtual

The first day will be dedicated to the evaluation of the basic challenged with which iClass R&D process has struggled.

The second day will be dedicated to a critical open-ended presentation of iClass’ response to these challenged, its design approach and process, and its system design and main features.

Guiding questions for day 1:

  • What are the impacts of the digital civilization on desired individual, social and cultural development?
  • How can we optimize the power of the digital civilization for the enhancement of human development and wellbeing?
  • In light of the above questions, what should be the aims and main processes of education in postmodern European democracies?
  • What educational theories, methodologies and tools should be used to realize these aims?
  • What should be the role of the digital technology and environment in education in light of the above?

Guiding questions for day 2:

  • What are the social, psychological and pedagogical challenges to which iClass and other platforms respond?
  • What answers do their visions and models give?
  • How do the designs of the platforms support their pedagogical visions and models?

The discussions will be accompanied by responses (in session or in a separate session).
